National Centre of Scientific Research "Demokritos", Athens, Greece

Demokritos, the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) is the largest research center in Greece and the Balkans, involved in multidisciplinary research with institutes in different disciplines. The primary interaction will be with the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications .

The Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications (IIT) focuses on research and development in the areas of Telecommunications, Networks, Web Technologies and Intelligent Systems. The main strategic objective of IIT is to excel in research and innovation required for the development of the knowledge society. The target of its current research plan is to tackle the challenges that arise due to the massive volume of multimedia information, the need for ubiquitous and transparent network access anywhere and anytime, and the demand for personalized services through intelligent information processing. Current areas of focus include:

  • The development of future network technologies, including heterogeneous next generation wireless networks, that will allow ubiquitous access and increased capacity, performance, security and transparency.
  • A guaranteed and more secure end-to-end quality of experience for the transfer of multimedia data through the current and future available networks.
  • Smart/ innovative antennas, reconfigurable radio, MIMO systems and cross-layer optimization.
  • Location and location based systems for the provisioning of services to security, emergency, ambient assistance and identification.
  • Semantic analysis and management of multimedia information appearing in the Web and other multimodal sources.
  • User friendly and intelligent interfaces of systems and handsets based on semantically indexed information.

IIT participates actively in national, European and international research and technology projects in cooperation with industry, universities and other research organizations. The Institute is involved in the education and training of new research personnel, through national and international programs, by providing scholarships and organizing seminars, workshops and conferences.


University of the Aegean, Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, Samos Island, Greece

The University of the Aegean (UoA) is an international research-oriented university. UoA is an inspiring, innovative, socially committed institution, embodying the concept of a 'university- network' operating in Lesvos, Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Syros, Lemnos and Athens. The Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering of UoA is a multi-disciplinary research unit conducting technology policy, research and prototyping, evaluation and life-cycle management over a wide range of application areas within the public and private sectors, at an international scale.


Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation, Samos Island, Greece

Archipelagos, Institute of Marine Conservation , is a Greek non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conservation of the marine and terrestrial environments of the Greek seas and islands. Archipelagos has been active since 1998 in several parts of the Greek seas (Ionian, Sporades, Central Aegean, Lybian and Eastern Aegean).

Archipelagos' Marine Research Base is located in Ormos Marathokampos, at the south part of Samos, the "Island of Pythagoras" and provides:

  • Office facilities for 30 people.
  • Wireless internet connection.
  • Laboratory equiped for the analysis of soil, water, plant, algae, invertebrate and fish samples, as well as for microbial analysis.
  • Classroom with audio-visual equipment.
  • Small library specialized in marine sciences.
  • Diving and snorkelling equipment.
  • Oceanographic dataloggers.
  • Equipment for passive acoustic monitoring of marine mammals.
  • Shared accommodation facilities for 34 people consisting of 8 apartments with communal kitchen facilities.
  • Ancillary accommodation for 20 people.
